THE BORING LIFE OF A FOREX TRADER
I used to think “The Boring Life of a Forex Trader” was just another catchy headline - until I found myself staring at charts for hours, waiting… and waiting… and waiting some more. No thrilling action yet, no constant adrenaline rush - just patience, discipline and a whole lot of sitting around.
The truth is, the boredom is there not because of idleness, on the contrary, it comes from patiently waiting for your setup to align. From resisting the urge to chase down random rewards which could end up in emotional injuries and psychological imbalance.
To be honest, sometimes the wait can be long and boring - from long hours to days to even weeks. But I learnt to manage it in a more productive way so that at the end of the day, I still feel accomplished.
What are some of the ways I’ve adopted to manage the boring life that comes with trading?
Well, I haven’t started raking in thousands of dollars in profits just yet which could go a long way to keep my day fun and/or engaged all through. While I’m still in the process, here’s how I’ve learnt to cope:
Reading - My love for reading has grown so much and I use books to fill in those bland hours of waiting for setups. Mostly self-help, inspiration and personal development books but you can read whatever interests you.
Workouts - Push-ups have become a daily diet and quite frankly, it helps me a lot. Not just physically (the mad upper strength you gain is crazy btw) but also mentally as it helps with discipline, now I just do it for fun while pushing my limits in the process. Next is stretching which helps relieve stress and pent-up tension in my body because as a forex trader, you’re almost bound to a sedentary lifestyle which, on the long run, can become problematic if not carefully managed.
Other forms of leisure activities I indulge in that help too are gaming, music and movies. These too help for relaxation, rebalancing your psychology after a losing streak and everything that comes with it.
The bottom line is, as a trader, you can’t escape boredom. You either learn to fall in love with it or let its wave wash you away into trading activities that aren’t so healthy. I choose to embrace it as part of the process because the market moves when it wants to and not because of my $10.
So understand that patience in trading is a superpower. Choosing not to trade is also part of trading because waiting is a huge part of the game. Embrace the boredom and you’ll master the game.
